Features: Giglist’s Gig Of The Week – Dry Cleaning @ Hyde Park Book Club

Each week we’re putting focus on one upcoming gig we’re psyched for, and this week it’s London’s Dry Cleaning.

There’s countless contemporary bands that detail anxieties of socialising, social media, and modern existence within their songwriting, but none that quite pick apart these themes with such a uniquely dry, sardonic delivery as this post-punk outfit.

What began as casual jamming between friends in 2017 slowly evolved into a full-blown project with the addition of vocalist and fellow art student Flo Shaw, prompting the band virtually recording their debut EP before they’d even played live.

Shaw’s lyrics bounce between matter-of-fact statements or complete non-sequiturs, touching on both the social realism of John Cooper Clarke and dream-like musings of Stereolab’s Lætitia Sadier. Dry Cleaning’s instrumentation is scratchy and moody, whilst the vocals borderline on the hilarious to the absurd. They’re certainly different let’s say – ode to (not-so) royal Meghan Markle ‘Magic Of Meghan’ solidified that at least.

This weekend’s sold out show at Leed’s Hyde Park Book Club indicates their swelling interest and we’ll be there to witness a band on the incline, so stay tuned for the review.
