Windmill Brixton has helped launch the careers of countless artists including the likes of Florence + the Machine, Shame, Squid, Black Country, New Road, Mica Levi, black midi in recent years.
Now the venue wants to focus its attentions on bringing through a new generation of non-male identifying talent with its initiative Come Back Better.
Women only make up 16% of all artists in industry and 12% of all songwriters, and the turbulent time that grassroots music has been through due to the pandemic, opportunities for unsigned female, non-binary, and trans artists will be even more scarce.
In conjunction with Dr. Martens, Windmill Brixton will offer networking, mentorship, and collaborative opportunities with the venue’s community, with local favourites Goat Girl offering unsigned artists the chance to support them in a one-off show on 30th June, graphic artist Raissa Pardini, photographer Holly Whitaker, and promoter Maddy O’Keefe all offering their guidance.
